                                                            THE HEALTH HEROES

Surgeon, anaesthetist, “theatre team”, clad in blue,

on lower left leg, skilfully, two grafts will ensue,

wake up, drowsy, in spacious recovery room,

smiling nurses delete my earlier gloom.

 

Night, day, sensitive, sprightly, staff prepare and care,

their knowledge, expertise, graciously share.

 

Fourth day, avoid books, computer, too lethargic,

no visitors, lockdown, Covid-19 pandemic,

doctor permits a five-minute walk, per two hours,

also nurse guides me for first of daily showers.

 

Bandaged leg encased up to the thigh in plastic,

oh, the joy, upright, vibrant, refreshed, ecstatic,

return to bed, limb raised, lying on my back,

what the hell, just seven days, medically on track.

 

Congratulations “Team”:

Management, nurses, staff, walk tall, be proud,

creating bonhomie, so explicitly profound.
